“Fall”ing on Main Street

Did you ever wonder why many of us call this season “fall” while others call it “autumn”?  After reading several articles and going down the rabbit hole of late 16th century poetry, I have decided that, rather than the “falling of leaves” or “falling of the sun” explanation, I personally prefer the poetic complement made in Sir Walter Raleigh’s parody “The Nymph’s Reply to the Shepherd” (to Christopher Marlowe’s, “The Passionate Shepherd to his Love”): “The flowers do fade, and wanton fields, To wayward winter reckoning yields, A honey tongue, a heart of gall, Is fancy’s spring, but sorrow’s fall.” [...]
